‘SOLID COMFORT’ by: J.S. Gagnow The
mere mention of ‘up north’ or ‘going to the cabin’ is always greeted
with a rush of adrenaline. The
mystique of spending a couple of days ‘up north’ has with me anyway
a more calming affect than even the strongest dose of medication. As
I sit here on this bitterly cold December morning in ‘Solid Comfort’
enjoying a few days of
There
were eleven of us; some came to hunt, some to relax, and some to just
pass the time with old friends. It’s
an awesome site to see eleven personalities, of all ages and occupations
come together. The
younger generation (Jake, Doug (no so young), Robert, and Riley); not
here to hunt so much as to enjoy life long friendships, play cards,
and enjoy a few modern and refreshingly strong libations.
Tom
(friend to Ritchie); well Tom comes to maintain the cabin, keep us fed,
to be with his sons (part of the younger generation), and breath in
as much of the cold north air as humanly possible. The
two new guys (Mike & Tom); bringing us new stories and perspectives
while Roger; well what can be said about Roger; he is a hunter, story
teller, and couch model. Yet
another old friend was able to join us this year; Ryan; up and coming
outdoorsman and hunter. Then
there is Ritchie (co owner) whom I’ve only known for 6 years; but because
of certain life altering circumstances it feels like a lifetime. Then there is myself; a hunter and writer of
this little diddy. But
now I sit alone; completely relaxed, thinking more clearly than I have
in a while. Preparing for the
afternoon hunt and wondering what the next phase of my life will bring
(usually occurring and changing every 10 minutes.). It’s
unfortunate we can only enjoy this type of atmosphere or this calming
affect but if only a few times a year.
Then again without reality and the trials and tribulations of
life, going ‘up north’ to ‘the cabin’ wouldn’t have meaning……at least
not to me. For
this hunter; Enjoy each sunrise and sunset For each day is one less Making the next; more valuable
than the one before. |
