where you fish? - Rod brady

You know one of the most unique things about fishing is "the ability toadvance mentally while participating in repetitious movements." or for us simple folk"yuu shure can lern a lot wyle kastin fer bazz". Take the other day for instance…..while out fishing I decided to look into a new area that I thought may be good in early spring. I had a gut feeling as to what the current would be doing here because of many hours of studying bottom content during low water periods.

This particular area was a ditch where the main current flow was redirected in two different directions headed to the same lake. There is a nice sand ledge present and a beautiful eddy was swirling off a rock point and swinging into a depression between the point and submerged rock pile, not to mention, all of the log jams present from years past spring runoffs. I began pitching a Stump Bumper Jig into current seams and asked my buddy to throw a crankbait. In just a few cast he hooked into a chunky keeper largemouth. I immediately switched to a Rat-L-Trap on 15lb flourocarbon and in a couple of cast I caught a bruiser bronzeback and a few more casts with the Trap produced about a three pound largemouth.

I then turned my attention away from fishing and straight to analyzing. I looked at where three fish came from and studied every detail of current flow. Areas such as these are often overlooked or understudied by other anglers. They catch a fish or two while on the move and keep right on going. Well I am here to tell you that is a huge mistake. I spend countless hours looking for areas where current flow is disrupted or funneled down.

These areas are magnets to one kind of fish…..HUNGRY ONES. Fish found in these types of areas are there, in my opinion, to strictly feed. They position themselves to take full advantage of mother natures buffet. Largemouth and smallmouth bass alike frequent these areas feeding on anything the current flow pushes by them while spending little energy hiding in slack water created by the disruption. Areas like these have accounted for probably half of my career earnings.

So the next time you are out on the water, pull out your map and go in search of these fish holding areas. Work them over good and try and let the current do most of the fishing for you. I can assure you you'll put more fish in the boat….find an area such as this with deeper water nearby and you've got a recipe for big bass. Good luck, Tight Lines and God Bless. Please remember to practice CPR….Catch, Photo and Release.
